Objective — To Introduce the reader to Version Control and its purpose using the open source services of Github or Bitbucket as well as how to install their respective programs on to your computer.

GitHub is an Internet hosting service for software development and version control using Git. It provides the distributed version control of Git plus access control, bug tracking, software feature requests, task management, continuous integration, and wikis for every project. While owned by Microsoft, the open source community is what makes up the heart of GitHub and is fundamental to how we build software today.

Built for teams, Bitbucket Cloud, like GitHub, is a Git based code hosting and collaboration tool. Bitbucket utilizes Jira and Trello integrations designed to bring the entire software team together to execute on a project. Providing one place for your team to collaborate on code from concept to Cloud.

When it comes down to which service to use, that depends on the project lead and the development team. For the purposes of GameDevHq, GitHub is the repository host of choice.

Installation on to your computer is fairly straight forward. Run the installer and follow the prompts, set up was default. Of course depending on your needs there may be some settings to adjust here and there to meet your needs.

Thank you for reading, up next, “How to create a GitHub Repository and link it to your Local Project and commit it to Version Control”.
